Fused quartz tubing may appear straightforward, but selecting the right tubing requires more than choosing an outside diameter. Inside diameter, wall thickness, length, dimensional tolerance and operating conditions can all influence how the tubing performs.
At Technical Glass Products, we help customers evaluate these variables together so the finished component fits the equipment and the process.
Start With Inside and Outside Dimensions
Inside diameter controls the available flow path or interior working space. Outside diameter may determine whether the tubing fits a compression fitting, furnace opening, support or surrounding assembly. Wall thickness affects the relationship between these dimensions and may influence handling, fabrication and thermal behavior.
These measurements should be specified independently whenever the application requires more than a general-purpose tube.
Consider the Entire Operating Environment
Dimensions alone do not establish whether tubing is appropriate for an application. Other important factors include:
- Operating and peak temperatures
- Heating and cooling rates
- Pressure or vacuum exposure
- Process atmosphere
- Chemical contact
- Required material grade
- Optical-transmission needs
- Support and mounting conditions
- Connections to other components
A tube used as a furnace chamber has different demands from one used as a protective sleeve, optical enclosure or laboratory flow path.
Standard and Specialty Shapes
Round tubing is common, but not every system is designed around a circular profile. Specialty quartz tubing can include square, rectangular, oval, flat, twin-bore and multihole configurations. Precision-bore tubing may also be appropriate where the internal dimension is especially important.
Custom features such as bends, transitions, ports, joints and end configurations can be incorporated when a standard length of tubing does not provide the complete solution.
Specify What Is Functionally Important
The most effective tubing specification identifies the dimensions and properties that control performance. Applying extremely tight tolerances to every feature may add complexity without improving the application. Leaving critical dimensions undefined can create fit and alignment problems.
Our technical product resources provide information about available quartz tubing and related forms. When the application requires more than a stock tube, our fabrication capabilities allow us to cut, form, join and modify quartz around the customer’s requirements.
The right tubing is not simply the closest available size. It is the tubing whose material, geometry and fabrication align with the way the system will operate.
